The End of Poverty: Economic Possibilities for Our Time
by Jeffrey D. Sachs, Foreward by Bono.
Penguin Publishers, 2005 |
|
|
Celebrated economist Jeffrey Sachs has a plan to eliminate extreme poverty around
the world by 2025. If you think that is too ambitious or wildly unrealistic, you
need to read this book. His focus is on the one billion poorest individuals around
the world who are caught in a poverty trap of disease, physical isolation, environmental
stress, political instability, and lack of access to capital, technology, medicine,
and Education. The goal is to help these people reach the first rung on the "ladder
of economic development" so they can rise above mere subsistence level and achieve
some control over their economic futures and their lives. This important book not
only makes the end of poverty seem realistic, but in the best interest of everyone
on the planet, rich and poor alike. |

by Sabina Alkire and Edmund Newell.
Church Publishing, Inc., 2005 |
|

What Can One Person Do? confronts a poverty-stricken world, and with clarity of

through a series of achievable objectives: the eight Millennium Developemnt goals
agreed to by the international community at the Millennium Summit in 2000. World
leaders and faith communities have adopted the MDGs, as well as the ideas found
within this book--for the authors demonstrate that as shared vision grows and as
these goals are accomplished, human communities shall indeed flourish. |

"Primetime Live" Diane Sawyer Interview with Brad Pitt
In a special hour-long "Primetime Live" report, Diane Sawyer talks with Brad Pitt
and also travels to Africa and reports on Pitt's recent tour -- where he witnessed
first-hand the devastating impact of AIDS and poverty on the continent. Pitt tells
Sawyer that he is frustrated by the fact that his personal life has been the
subject of a media frenzy while this humanitarian crisis has received relatively
little media coverage. "I can't get out of the press. These people can't get in
the press. So let's redirect the attention a little bit," says Pitt. "It drives
me mental seeing what I've seen and knowing that it doesn't show up in our news
every day."

You will probably want to preview the episode to include only the
interview about Africa and the footage from Africa itself (these
two are most of the episode and it is easy to skip the segment of
the interview on Pitt's personal life).
