In response to the movement to Make Poverty History, 85 people joined as ONE in
a truly multi-generational and ecumenical service to celebrate a special U2 Eucharist
on Sunday, October 22, 2006.
This U2 Eucharist featured music from U2's catalog, including such favorites as
Where the Streets Have No Name, Yahweh, Elevation, and One. In addition to the inspiring
and energizing music of U2, this worship service focused attention on ending extreme
poverty, promoting the
ONE campaign,
and raising nearly $800 for the Millennium Village of Mbola, Tanzania.
Sample songs from the Oct. 22, 2006 U2charist.
Things to know about U2...the one paragraph version: They
have always been a Christian band, but avoided signing with
a Christian label because they didn't want to preach to the
choir. "You" in their songs is often God. Sometimes it is
God addressing us. There was an online attempt recently to
come up with one song by U2 that wasn't referring to things
spiritual and no one was able to do so...The image of God
as lover, luring us closer, or our desire and hunger for
God are regular themes. So are the themes of social justice
and doing our part to bring about the reign of God in the
here and now.
Bono, lead singer of
U2,
has received international acclaim (including Time Magazine's "Man of the Year"
and a nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize) for his campaign to end AIDS and
extreme poverty. His passion and mission grows from his Christian faith. Bono
is the founder of Debt, AIDS, Trade, Africa (DATA)
and active founder of the ONE campaign to Make Poverty History.
The
Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are the world's
time-bound and quantified targets for addressing extreme
poverty in its many dimensions-income poverty, hunger,
disease, lack of adequate shelter, and exclusion-while
promoting gender equality, education, and environmental
sustainability. They are also basic human rights-the
rights of each person on the planet to health, education,
shelter, and security. Learn more about the MDGs and
extreme poverty on our
Global Missions/Outreach page.
ONE is an effort by Americans to rally Americans – ONE by
ONE – to fight the emergency of global AIDS and extreme
poverty. ONE is students and ministers, punk rockers and
NASCAR moms, Americans of all beliefs and every walk of
life, united as ONE to help make poverty history. ONE
believes that allocating an additional ONE percent of
the U.S. budget toward providing basic needs like health,
education, clean water and food would transform the
futures and hopes of an entire generation in the world's
poorest countries. ONE also calls for debt cancellation,
trade reform and anti–corruption measures in a comprehensive
package to help Africa and the poorest nations beat AIDS
and extreme poverty.
